PREMA Racing scored a podium finish and experienced an overall positive race 1 at Red Bull Ring, home to the opening round of the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship.
Russian Robert Shwartzman posted an outstanding third place after taking off from the 8th position of the grid at his maiden race in the series. Mick Schumacher, on the other hand, also fought at the front at the front but an off relegated him to P11.
The German started well moving up to P3 in the opening lap, then kept the pace while preserving his tires for a 20-lap stint. A superb pit-stop by the Prema crew saw Schumacher emerge from the pits in the lead. With no tire temperature, the he did his utmost to maximize his position and stay in contention. Unfortunately, a later off into the gravel trap while he was second deprived him of a certain podium finish.
Russian Shwartzman had an even stronger run at the start, recovering up to P5 from eighth place. After coming in for an earlier stop which saw a min, he had his fair share of fighting in the second half of the race. After coming out of an earlier pit in the midpack, he crossed swords with former teammate Marcus Armstrong in a spectacular battle. Shwartzman put up a bold charge but avoided to take huge risks, thinking to championship points and celebrating his first F2 podium.
