PREMA Racing experienced a good start in the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship opener at Red Bull Ring. The team's three drivers fought for pole in an impossibly close qualifying session. After a rain-affected early practice, qualifying was run in the early afternoon.
The action was among the most hard-fought ever seen, with the top-8 covered by just 0.2 seconds. Australian Oscar Piastri scored third place at his very first appearance in the championship, beating team-mate Logan Sargeant by mere thousands for the inside of row 2.
The Floridian, who was leading with the first set of tires, eventually took P4, while Dane Frederik Vesti barely missed the top-5 after an earlier spin at the last corner and grabbed P6, still less than three-tenths of a second away from the lead.
#1 - Oscar Piastri
"Free practice was a good start. I was a bit cautious in the wet and when we change to slicks I felt really confident in the car, just trying to find the dry areas of the track. Pace was really strong at the end and I finished P2. Qualifying was pretty good too in P3, we missed the pole by a little bit but I felt very comfortable, still getting into grips with the car but I was consistent, didn't make major mistakes so I'm quite happy with how it went. It's a very good start to the season and hopefully we can build from here."
# 2 - Frederik Vesti
"I'm happy for the result of the first qualifying session of the year. We have been working really hard coming from the test in Bahrain, and we did a lot of good steps. We got a great baseline for the season. We have something to improve for next week and the next qualy. Now the full focus is on the races as it's a completely different task. I'm happy for today and I'm definitely looking forward to going to race and starting from P6."
# 3 - Logan Sargeant
"The first day back in FIA F3 went pretty well. This morning it was pretty wet at the start of the day, and I felt really confident in that condition. Then we moved to slicks in a more mixed conditions track. From there we just moved on to qualy, we had a look at the driving and I think we did a good job at improving the way I was driving for qualifying. The car felt fantastic, so big thanks to Prema and going from P4 tomorrow, we are definitely looking to challenge for the win."
