The FIA Formula 2 qualifying session at Monza was heavily impacted by weather as drops of rain and disruptions with yellow and red flags created inconsistent conditions for drivers to put up their full effort especially over the expected two runs.
At the end of the day, PREMA Racing’s Mick Schumacher ended up in 9th position after a slight mistake cost him valuable time in his first quick lap attempt. In the second run, the conditions did not allow the German to improve, so he had to be content with a row five start for tomorrow race 1.
Sean Gelael barely missed the top -ten by just a few hundreds of a second, showing his potential in a very close-knit pack at the fast Italian venue. He will thus start from row 6, right behind his teammate.

“The session, in general, was a bit messy and difficult due to the weather. Being out on slicks in rainy conditions is never easy, and we just did not manage to get it right this time. I think we had the speed to do a bit better than P9 in Qualifying but a mistake in my lap cost me a few tenths and obviously positions. Seeing 3 rookies in front shows that there would have been potential to be further up too. However, for the race, it is a whole different story in my view. I feel comfortable on the track here, and we get so much support that it pushes me even more to work hard and try my best in the race tomorrow.”

"I think we are back to where we should have always been, around the top-10. The last three races were a bit of a struggle for me for a lot of different reasons. While I cannot say that today it was a shame, I still think we could have done better. Potentially, while everyone was improving, we were among the ones who improved the most, but the red flag did not help us. Anyway, it's Monza, there will be a lot of overtaking opportunities tomorrow and starting around the top-10 should be good."
