Prema Racing secured two top-10 positions in qualifying for the opening round of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship at Bahrain International Circuit. In a session disrupted by a red flag situation, Indonesian Sean Gelael posted his best qualifying result in Formula 2 despite running on a conservative strategy that, unlike his contenders, saw him use only one set of option tires. At the challenging desert venue the 22-year-old racer finished in P7, managing a fourth-row start for tomorrow’s feature race.
At his very first qualifying session in the series, Mick Schumacher showed great potential since the outset. The 20-year-old German eventually rounded out the top-10, with a lock-up while running on his second set of tires depriving him of a higher placing.
As always, tire wear is set to become a key variable on race day so the team is now looking forward to capitalizing on today’s positive outcome and work hard in planning a strategy for the rest of the weekend.

“In general, I think we can be quite happy with how the day went. But then obviously without the mistake with my second set of tires, we would be in a better position. The potential is there, I feel very comfortable in the car and it feels amazing to drive especially on the option tires. The race is going to be interesting!”
# 10 - Sean Gelael
"I think it has been a really good session as I got my first top-10 qualifying result. We worked very hard over the winter and this is a result to be happy about, especially considering the conditions we were in, using both prime and option tires. That said, we still need to focus on tomorrow’s race, in which we can get a really good result. Thanks to the team for helping me to be where we are now, essentially in a good position to fight for tomorrow."
