PREMA Racing is finally bracing for the opening round of the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship. As the Coronavirus pandemic forced motorsport to delay the start of the season, the wait is now over, and all teams and drivers are ready to hit the track at Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

The highly-technical Austrian track, located among the Styrian countryside, will host two rounds in two weeks, with F2 and F3 supporting the Formula 1 World Championship. Mick Schumacher and Robert Shwartzman will be headlining the team’s effort. The 21-year-old German, at his second year in the series, is willing to capitalize on his 2019 experience beginning on a racetrack that saw him deliver a brilliant sprint race performance last year.

On the other hand, 20-year-old Russian Shwartzman is coming from a superb 2019 Formula 3 season and is aiming to go beyond the regular rookie role. For all drivers and teams, the main variable and possibly a further equalizing factor will be the debut of the new-for-2020 Pirelli tires with 18-inch rims. The aggressive look will be just the tip of the iceberg, with many of the real-world implications still to be understood in their full scale.

In the past few months, the team practised social distancing and fully complied with the national and local regulations, putting in place the protocols needed to prepare for the season safely and efficiently. It’s now time to let the track give its answers, and everyone is looking forward to a weekend of fine racing.

Rene Rosin - Team Principal

“We could not wait to go back into action. It will be a weird feeling, opening the year in the heat of summer in Austria, but I think our concrete approach will help us to focus on this weekend as… a normal weekend for how possible. Our drivers are highly motivated, and we are delighted to field such a strong line-up representing the Ferrari Driver Academy. We look forward to a smooth and nice weekend, but more than that, a safe one. Our determination has not changed, nor has our goal.”
