Charles Leclerc and Prema Racing brought home their fifth win of the year today at Silverstone, in the sixth round of the 2017 FIA Formula 2 Championship. The Monegasque rookie, a graduate from the Ferrari Driver Academy, led from pole to finish scoring 25 extremely valuable points for the championship and extending his lead over his closest contender.

Leclerc led the opening stages and then controlled the situation despite the concerns for some smoke coming from the back of his car before pitting. Once back in clean air, and after all the contenders made their mandatory stops, Leclerc eased to win by almost 9 seconds. Adding an even more positive flavour to his day, the fact that he performed brilliantly with both the prime and the option tires.

After facing an extremely difficult qualifying session, Antonio Fuoco was forced to start from the back of the pack. The Italian rookie struggled to find a good chemistry with his car but logged some really good final laptimes and his personal best at the last lap, 6th best of the race.

“We got a good start and the first lap was also pretty good. We were fast on the option tires and we had quite a big gap when we pitted for primes. We had a problem which was a bit scary as I saw some smoke behind. Nothing happened afterwards though and there were no messages on the steering wheel. We will have a look to see what happened. After that we were fast on the prime tires too. At the beginning I took my time because we knew that there would have been graining problems if we pushed too hard from the beginning. I knew that Norman was pushing behind me but I stayed calm until I could start to push again because the car was great and then I began to open a gap again. It was a really good race, probably the most positive of the season as it shows the steps we did. I’m very happy about how it ended up today.”

“We started far down the order after yesterday’s qualifying and in the first stint with the option tires it was tough to complete six laps with so much degradation. Once back with the prime tires I felt the same feeling of yesterday with the car and we don’t know why.”
