Delivering a stunning qualifying lap, Pierre Gasly took home his fifth pole of the season and his third straight one in the 2016 GP2 Series finale at Abu Dhabi. Qualifying went underway under artificial lights on Friday evening at the majestic Emirates venue, and Gasly put together a highly-impressive performance all around. The Frenchman, part of the Red Bull Junior program, set a personal best lap of 1’47”476 during his first attempt, while a slight mistake under braking prevented him from making further gains in his second run. Team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi was less lucky as he ended up 6th after being slowed down by another driver in his final attempt. The Italian saw Gasly trim his gap in standings to three points thanks to the four lengths gained with the pole.

“Qualifying wasn’t really fantastic. I faced lots of traffic so I never had the chance to put a lap together but P6 for tomorrow isn’t really far from Pierre. He is on pole but we have two long races in front of us so there is still a lot we can do. We will see how it goes tomorrow…”

It has been a fantastic day with a superb performance and a pole position in qualifying. I’m just really happy about how the session went. The car was perfect and I could do everything I wanted with it, pushing very hard while still being comfortable. When I crossed the line and saw the laptime i didn’t expect it even though I knew that we were really good. It was one of the best laps in my GP2 career and it feels great to have put it together here. I want to thank the team for the unbelievable car they provided me with. I hope we will carry on tomorrow and keep the same pace during the race.
